In a significant initiative for environmental restoration, Mast Reforestation has successfully buried over 4,500 metric tons of biomass in southern Montana, addressing the aftermath of a devastating wildfire. This innovative approach aims to trap carbon and methane emissions from burned trees while facilitating the recovery of the landscape.
The Seattle-based startup's process involves creating a clay-lined vault to permanently dispose of the charred timber, preventing gases from escaping into the atmosphere. Maria Huyer, head of product at Mast, emphasized the cost-effectiveness of this solution compared to traditional land remediation methods.
Following the burial, the company has reported that 80% of the carbon credits generated have already been sold. With sensors monitoring the vault for any signs of decomposition, Mast Reforestation's project not only helps restore the forest but also contributes to climate change mitigation efforts.
