Canopii, an Oregon-based startup, is set to launch a WeFunder campaign this week aiming to secure $1.5 million for developing a commercial greenhouse in Portland. This initiative seeks to promote a franchising model of robotic farming that minimizes the need for human labor while providing organic produce to local communities.
The company’s innovative greenhouse occupies less space than a tennis court and is designed to produce 40,000 pounds of greens annually, sufficient to feed approximately 20,000 people. The system operates efficiently with reduced water and power needs, making it suitable for urban environments.
CEO and co-founder David Ashton emphasized the goal of creating future job opportunities for local farmers through this venture. Canopii has already secured $3.6 million in funding since its inception in 2021, primarily from grants and investments from various sources.
The startup is also exploring AI technology for plant monitoring to enhance efficiency further. Ashton's vision was shaped by his experiences during California's drought, where he recognized the challenges of traditional farming methods and the extensive water requirements associated with them.
