Slate Auto is set to start accepting orders for its first electric vehicle, a modular pickup truck, on June 24th, with deliveries expected later this year. The startup, backed by Jeff Bezos, has informed potential customers via email that a reservation fee of $50 is required for those wishing to secure their vehicle ahead of others.
While the company has launched an online configurator, it has not disclosed the base price of the truck, which is anticipated to be in the mid-$20,000s. An additional feature to convert the vehicle into an SUV will cost approximately $5,000 more. Originally, Slate aimed for a price below $20,000, but changes to the federal EV tax credit affected this goal.
The truck, which was unveiled in April 2025, stands out for its simplicity, offering essential features while allowing customization through various modules. It relies on users' smartphones or tablets for its infotainment system and lacks conventional amenities like speakers and powered windows. This approach could make the vehicle more appealing than competitors such as the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf, especially in a challenging EV market.
