Yann LeCun, the former chief A.I. scientist at Meta, is establishing a new venture called Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI Labs) after his departure from the company in late 2025. This Paris-based startup has already secured $1.03 billion in funding, achieving a valuation of $3.5 billion. LeCun announced his vision at the VivaTech conference on June 17, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches beyond the current reliance on large language models (LLMs) in A.I.
LeCun argues that the industry has become overly dependent on scaling LLMs, leading to a “monoculture” in A.I. systems. While these models excel in tasks such as coding, they are limited by their language-centric design. He advocates for the development of “world models” that can learn from real-world data, process complex scenarios, and make informed decisions.
With the backing of AMI Labs, LeCun aims to create systems that could potentially exhibit capabilities akin to human intelligence, including planning and reasoning. His critiques of the current A.I. landscape are particularly significant, given his stature as one of the prominent figures in the field, often referred to as a "Godfather of A.I." alongside Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio.
