A potential £3 billion class action lawsuit against Apple may benefit approximately 40 million users in the UK if the case is successful. The consumer advocacy group Which? has initiated the lawsuit, alleging that Apple has effectively locked customers into its iCloud service since November 2018.
The lawsuit is set to proceed to trial, with a hearing anticipated in October 2028. Consumers who utilized iCloud during the specified period and were residing in the UK on June 8, 2026, will be automatically included unless they opt out by October 8, 2026. Each eligible individual could receive around £77 from the settlement.
Apple has dismissed the claims as baseless, asserting that users are not compelled to rely on iCloud and have various alternatives available. The company provides limited free storage, after which users are incentivized to pay for increased capacity, with plans ranging from 99p per month for 50GB to £54.99 for 12TB. Anabel Hoult, CEO of Which?, emphasized the significance of holding powerful companies accountable for anti-competitive practices.
