Starting June 29, Alphabet will join the Dow Jones Industrial Average, taking the place of Verizon. This marks the first change in the index since 2024, when Nvidia and Sherwin-Williams were added. S&P Global made the announcement earlier today, emphasizing that Alphabet's inclusion highlights sectors such as AI, advertising, and cloud infrastructure.
Alphabet's extensive portfolio encompasses various areas, including healthcare technology and autonomous mobility, making it a significant representation of the Communication Services sector. In contrast, Verizon accounted for only 0.5% of the index due to its lower share price, which is crucial in a price-weighted index.
Currently, Alphabet's shares are trading at approximately seven times the value of Verizon's. Despite recent fluctuations linked to talent losses, Alphabet's stock has increased over 10% in 2026. This addition is expected to enhance the Dow's representation of the evolving U.S. economy.
