Warner Bros. has settled a legal dispute with Village Roadshow, which resulted in Village paying $57 million in damages. This outcome follows a complex legal battle regarding the release strategy of The Matrix Resurrections, which was launched simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max at the end of 2021. Initially, Village faced a potential liability of $125 million to acquire a 50% stake in the film, but this amount was reduced after an appeal ruled against the forced purchase of shares.
The litigation also encompassed other shared projects, including Wonka, with arbitration claims made by WB. In 2022, additional disputes arose, leading to Village Roadshow filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2025 and the subsequent sale of its library to Alcon Entertainment. The legal conflicts centered on Village's allegations of exclusion from co-financing opportunities for sequels and remakes of various properties.
Looking ahead, Warner Bros. has announced plans for a fifth installment in The Matrix series, expected to be released in 2024. This upcoming film, to be written and directed by Drew Goddard, will mark a departure from the original creators, Lana and Lily Wachowski, and currently does not feature any returning cast members.
