Changes to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) purchase agreements have sparked concern among owners, with reports indicating that contracts signed from 2016 to early 2024 now feature “supervised” language. Tesla's updated terminology, which implies the continued necessity for human oversight, was only introduced in 2024, raising questions about the retroactive alteration of existing contracts.
Oliver Abcarius, a Model 3 owner, discovered that his 2019 FSD purchase agreement has been modified, now labeled as “Full-Self Driving (Supervised) – August 12, 2019.” Attempts to access the original document resulted in an invalid link. Similar issues were reported with his wife’s 2020 Model Y documents, which are also inaccessible. Other owners of Tesla's HW3 vehicles have faced the same problem, as confirmed by Electrek.
Previously marketed as “Full Self-Driving Capability,” the FSD feature was believed to eventually enable fully autonomous driving through software updates. However, during an earnings call in April, Elon Musk stated that HW3 vehicles lack the necessary hardware to achieve unsupervised self-driving, emphasizing the limitations of this technology.
