In a bid to revolutionize data processing, Portland-based startup Panthalassa is testing its prototype data center node, Ocean-2, off the coast of Washington state. The startup, which has garnered backing from notable investors like Peter Thiel, aims to launch commercial floating data centers by 2027, a year ahead of SpaceX's planned deployment of orbital data centers in 2028.
These innovative floating centers utilize energy from ocean waves and cool themselves using seawater, positioning them as a potential solution to the challenges posed by traditional terrestrial data centers, including rising utility costs and environmental concerns. CEO Garth Sheldon-Coulson described the venture as “totally crazy,” emphasizing its unique approach to data management away from land-based conflicts.
While SpaceX's plans for space-based data centers remain laden with uncertainty and technical challenges, Panthalassa's ocean-based solution presents a compelling alternative in the evolving landscape of data processing and energy efficiency.
