SpaceX is advancing with its planned acquisition of Cursor, an artificial intelligence startup, for a total of $60 billion. The deal is set to finalize in the third quarter, at which point Cursor will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX. This acquisition is aimed at enhancing SpaceX's competitive positioning against rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI.
Cursor, developed by San Francisco-based Anysphere, has gained recognition as a leading AI coding assistant since its inception in 2022. The startup's popularity stems from its extensive reach among software engineers, which aligns with SpaceX's objectives. Previously, SpaceX had the option to either acquire Cursor or invest $10 billion for collaboration.
The partnership with SpaceX's subsidiary, xAI, is expected to leverage xAI’s extensive data capabilities at the Colossus data center in Memphis, Tennessee, to innovate future AI products. Cursor's technology has also heavily incorporated collaborations with major AI firms, including a notable integration with Anthropic’s tools.
Following its public offering, which occurred last Friday, SpaceX has seen its stock rise by 9% prior to Tuesday’s market opening, marking a successful debut for the company.
