A significant change is underway in Taylor, Texas, where approximately 88 acres of land once intended for public park use is being transformed into a data center, a move that has raised community concerns. Originally donated to the city in 1999 for just $10, the land was meant to serve as parkland as per the stipulations set forth by the Bland family.
Ownership of the property has shifted multiple times. Initially granted to the Texas Parks and Recreation Foundation, it was transferred to the Williamson County Park Foundation in 2003 and subsequently handed over to the City of Taylor. However, in 2008, the city sold the land to the Taylor Economic Development Corporation for $15,000. After remaining unused for several years, the TEDC sold it for $10 million to Blueprint, the company now developing the facility.
Community members, including Pamela Griffin, are voicing their concerns about the environmental impacts of constructing a 135,000-square-foot data center without local input. As the development progresses, residents reflect on the legacy of the land and the potential loss of a space meant for recreation.
