The Washington state legislature may soon consider a significant shift in property marketing practices with the introduction of SB6091. This proposed legislation aims to enhance the transparency of residential property listings, as it seeks to prevent exclusive marketing tactics by real estate brokers.
Supported by Washington Realtors, this bill encourages brokers to publicly market properties while allowing the use of private listing networks. The organization informed its members about the initiative on January 9 and shared the draft with the media on January 12.
Ryan Beckett, the association's president for 2026, emphasized that the goal of the measure is to prioritize consumer interests. Brokers would be permitted to engage in selective marketing only if they also ensure that listings are available to the general public.
This proposal does not require compliance with MLS regulations, distinguishing itself from similar initiatives by the National Association of Realtors. The bill reflects an ongoing effort to find a balance between various marketing strategies and consumer accessibility in the real estate market.
