Yasine Armstrong is set to lead New Mexico Angels, a nonprofit focused on startup investment, following the departure of Drew Tulchin, who has been at the helm for six years. Armstrong, who takes over this week, aims to enhance mentorship initiatives for emerging tech entrepreneurs in the state. She noted that many founders face challenges in identifying market needs for their innovations.
With a career spanning over 20 years in business development, Armstrong previously worked as the communications director for Homewise and has experience as a development director for Chaves County CASA. She co-founded Babypage, an app for tracking children's milestones, and expressed enthusiasm about returning to venture capital.
Tulchin reflected on the organization's impact during his tenure, mentioning that New Mexico Angels has invested more than $40 million into approximately 75 companies over the last two decades. He noted a significant improvement in the local startup environment compared to when he started, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both leaders highlighted the role of the New Mexico State Investment Council in energizing the state's startup ecosystem, attracting national interest from venture capitalists. Armstrong mentioned that New Mexico's reputation as a supportive environment for entrepreneurs is growing, encouraging more talent and businesses to establish and expand within the state.
