Meta has introduced a new policy allowing employees to pause its tracking program for up to 30 minutes to attend to personal matters. This change comes amid ongoing employee protests regarding the company's monitoring practices, which were integrated into the internal initiative known as the Model Capability Initiative (MCI).
Under the revised plan, some employees may request to opt out of the tracking altogether, particularly those working remotely with bandwidth issues or dealing with sensitive information. However, most employees will still be subject to the tracking of their keystrokes and mouse clicks aimed at enhancing Meta's AI training.
In response to employee feedback, Meta has also improved the software to reduce battery usage, although CEO Mark Zuckerberg has defended the program as essential for developing AI models. He emphasized that the data collected is not intended for performance evaluation but rather to inform AI on how skilled individuals complete tasks. This initiative follows recent layoffs affecting 8,000 workers and a shift towards AI-focused roles.
