A letter has been sent by a group of nine U.S. Senators and Members of Congress to Apple executives Tim Cook and John Ternus regarding the closure of the Apple Towson Town Center retail store in Maryland. This store holds significance as it was the first Apple location to unionize in June 2022.
Apple announced the closure of the Towson store, along with two others in California and Connecticut, due to their locations in underperforming malls. While the closures in California and Connecticut received little attention, the Towson shutdown has triggered a dispute with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The IAM claims that Apple is unfairly limiting transfer opportunities for unionized employees compared to non-unionized workers at the other store closures.
The congressional delegation is seeking clarity on the reasoning behind the closure and the support that will be offered to the nearly 100 affected employees. They are particularly interested in understanding the factors that influenced Apple's decision, the evaluation of alternatives to closure, and the economic impacts of this move on the local workforce.
