Apple Inc. has announced a price increase for its Mac mini desktop, now starting at $799, up from $599. This adjustment comes as the company phases out the entry-level configuration, which featured an M4 processor paired with 256 gigabytes of storage, and now offers the same processor with 512 gigabytes as the base model. The shift follows a surge in demand for these devices, particularly for artificial intelligence applications, which has led to inventory shortages.
During an earnings call, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook attributed the supply challenges to the limited availability of the advanced nodes used in the production of the systems on a chip (SoC). He noted that consumer interest in both the Mac mini and Mac Studio has exceeded expectations, highlighting their capabilities for AI-driven tasks. Cook indicated that achieving a balance between supply and demand could take several months.
Additionally, Apple plans to initiate production of some Mac mini models in Houston later this year, marking a significant shift from its usual manufacturing base in Asia. The company is also preparing to launch updated Mac Studios by year-end, as reported by Bloomberg News. Other Apple products, like the MacBook Neo, starting at $599, are experiencing stronger demand than anticipated.
