Nvidia has made its first legal AI investment through its NVentures fund, backing Legora, a Swedish-born startup focused on enhancing legal workflows with artificial intelligence. This investment is part of a $50 million Series D extension, following a previous $550 million round, bringing Legora's valuation to approximately $5.6 billion after exceeding $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
Legora competes with U.S. firm Harvey, which recently achieved an $11 billion valuation after significant backing from Sequoia. Both companies have been ramping up their market presence; Legora's platform, launched just 18 months ago, is now utilized by over 1,000 law firms across 50 markets. In contrast, Harvey claims to serve 100,000 lawyers from 1,300 organizations worldwide.
As both startups expand, Legora is focusing on the U.S. market while Harvey targets Europe. Their rivalry extends to marketing efforts, with Legora recently launching an ad campaign featuring actor Jude Law, while Harvey partnered with Gabriel Macht, known for his role in "Suits." Both companies rely on large language models from major AI firms, which may also emerge as competitors in the legal tech landscape.
