Apple is set to close three retail locations in the United States today, June 20, in response to challenging conditions at the respective malls. The affected stores include Apple Towson Town Center in Maryland, which will close at 8 p.m., and Apple North County in California, along with Apple Trumbull in Connecticut, both shutting down at 9 p.m.
The closures stem from a decline in business at the shopping centers, with Trumbull Mall recently defaulting on over $150 million in loans. Additionally, Towson Town Center has experienced significant retailer departures this year, including well-known brands like Tommy Bahama and Banana Republic.
In light of these changes, employees at the Trumbull and Escondido locations may continue their roles at nearby Apple stores, while those at Towson Town Center can apply for open positions in accordance with their collective bargaining agreement. This particular store was notable for being the first Apple location in the U.S. to unionize in June 2022. The decision to close has drawn criticism from both the union and local lawmakers, highlighting concerns over fair treatment for union-represented workers.
