Expedia Group is celebrating its 30th anniversary this week with the introduction of the Expedia Trails Fund, which features an initial allocation of $4.3 million in grants aimed at restoring outdoor trails across the United States. The event coincides with a partner conference in Las Vegas, where notable figures including founder Rich Barton, chairman Barry Diller, and former CEO Dara Khosrowshahi gathered with current CEO Ariane Gorin.
Gorin has outlined Expedia’s journey in three distinct phases, starting with the launch of the company within Microsoft in 1996, which marked the advent of internet travel bookings. The second phase involved the transition to mobile technology, prompting Expedia to adapt its services for smartphone users and expand through acquisitions. Currently, the focus is on artificial intelligence, as Expedia anticipates a future where machines may handle travel bookings with minimal human intervention.
Emphasizing the ongoing evolution of the travel industry, Gorin expressed enthusiasm about shaping the future of AI in travel. The company’s ability to reinvent its relationship with technology will play a crucial role in maintaining its leadership position in the market.
