As Apple prepares to shut down the Towson Town Center store in Maryland, 40 members of Congress are urging the company to reconsider its decision, expressing concerns over the potential impact on nearly 100 employees. This location, which became the first Apple store in the US to unionize in 2022, is at the center of a heated dispute regarding alleged retaliation against its unionized workers.
Apple announced in early April that the Towson store would close in June, citing “the departure of several retailers and declining conditions” at the shopping center. The IAM Union has accused Apple of limiting transfer opportunities for Towson employees compared to those at non-union stores, arguing that the company is acting against workers who have organized for better wages and conditions.
Following this controversy, Maryland lawmakers previously contacted Apple for clarification on the closure. In their recent letter, the Congressional members criticized Apple's actions as potentially illegal, characterizing them as part of a broader “union-busting effort.” They called for the exploration of alternatives to protect the jobs at the Towson location, emphasizing the broader implications for American workers.
