A proposal to collectively purchase the Seattle Seahawks has emerged from a local fan initiative led by Abel Charrow. The endeavor, titled “Let’s Buy the Seahawks,” aims to involve the community, allowing fans to participate in ownership rather than leaving it solely to wealthy individuals.
The campaign seeks to gather a total of $12 billion to secure the NFL franchise, a figure that Charrow considers achievable, if somewhat above the final sale price. With a potential ownership share costing approximately $15,365.02 per person if all 780,995 Seattle residents contribute, the more participants involved, the lower the individual cost. As of Tuesday afternoon, 153 shares have already been claimed.
Charrow, a partner at Extra Good Studio and a lifelong Seahawks enthusiast, emphasizes that while the initiative is playful, it also serves as a critique of the immense financial barriers to owning a professional sports team. He finds inspiration in the Green Bay Packers' shareholder model, although he acknowledges that the effort is more of a lighthearted commentary than a serious bid.
