A significant advancement in lunar exploration is on the horizon as Lunar Outpost secures $30 million in Series B funding to develop a new rover named Pegasus. This Colorado-based robotics firm aims to launch Pegasus by 2028 in conjunction with NASA’s Artemis 4 mission, which marks a pivotal moment for human-robot collaboration on the moon.
Lunar Outpost is redefining its approach by focusing on creating infrastructure for a sustained human presence rather than merely conducting scientific experiments. Vice President Michael Moreno emphasized that the company is positioning itself as a contractor for lunar construction, with plans to establish essential components such as energy storage and habitat construction. Currently, it claims to have more lunar rovers in mission assignments than all other commercial entities combined, indicating a robust portfolio of lunar mobility options.
The partnership with Artemis 4 is particularly noteworthy, as it will feature a MAPP rover working alongside an astronaut, a first in space history. This semi-autonomous rover will assist human crew members, providing a glimpse into the future of human-robot collaboration on the lunar surface.
