In the latest Global Automotive Color Popularity Report by Axalta, released in December 2025, a significant majority of vehicles continue to be painted in neutral tones. White remains the leading color at nearly 30 percent, with black and gray following at 23 percent and 22 percent, respectively. Together, these three colors dominate the automotive market, accounting for a substantial share of factory builds.
Reflecting trends from the 2021 report by PPG, which indicated that white, black, gray, and silver represented 78 percent of all vehicles produced, the demand for vibrant hues like red and blue is gradually increasing. In 2021, red and blue combined accounted for only 15 percent of factory outputs, with 7 percent for red and 8 percent for blue.
Recent advancements in sustainable painting technologies have also contributed to this trend, allowing for more personalization options such as two-tone finishes. As car manufacturers respond to evolving consumer preferences, reds and blues are experiencing a resurgence, hinting at a potential shift towards a more colorful automotive landscape.
