Shinkei Systems has developed an innovative robot named Poseidon, designed to address the humane treatment of fish during harvesting. The device, roughly the size of a refrigerator, employs computer vision to identify fish species and humanely dispatch them by severing their gills and piercing their brains, thus preventing a slow death that would otherwise lead to stress and reduced quality.
Founded by Saif Khawaja, Shinkei aims to revolutionize the fish processing industry, moving beyond traditional harvesting methods to a more automated and humane approach. The company has expanded its operations into a vertically integrated fish harvester and processor, leveraging robotics and AI throughout the supply chain.
Fishermen receive Poseidon machines at no cost and are compensated at premium rates for the fish processed by the robots, significantly above typical auction prices. In return, Shinkei retains ownership of the fish, which are then transported to a 16,000-square-foot facility in Tacoma, Washington, for further processing.
