Stonepeak and Alphabet have finalized an agreement to merge Astound Broadband with GFiber, establishing a new independent broadband provider. This move marks a significant reshaping of the telecommunications landscape in the Seattle area, where the original company was founded.
As part of the arrangement, Stonepeak will own a majority stake, while Alphabet retains a notable minority interest. Leadership will be provided by the existing management team from GFiber. The merger is part of a broader trend of consolidation in the high-speed internet sector, with both companies looking to enhance their competitive edge.
Astound, which serves major markets such as Seattle, Chicago, and New York, was previously acquired by Stonepeak for $8.1 billion in 2021. The integration with GFiber's established presence in cities like Austin and Atlanta is expected to create a more robust platform for delivering advanced connectivity solutions.
Pending regulatory approvals, the transaction is anticipated to close by the end of the year, allowing the new entity to better compete against major players like Comcast and AT&T.
