Amazon's third-party marketplace achieved $42.5 billion in revenue last quarter, with independent sellers representing 62% of units sold. In a significant organizational change, the company has appointed Amit Agarwal to lead its Seller Partner Services division, expanding his responsibilities beyond overseeing Amazon's international stores in ten countries.
Currently serving as the SVP of International Emerging Stores, Agarwal will take over the seller services and customer trust organizations. The outgoing VP of Worldwide Selling Partner Services, Dharmesh Mehta, is set to transition into a technical advisor role for CEO Andy Jassy in March. This position, commonly known as the CEO's "shadow," has previously been a stepping stone for senior leaders within Amazon.
Mehta's tenure saw a focus on combating fraud and counterfeits while also enhancing logistics and supply chain management tools for sellers. His efforts included eliminating the controversial practice of inventory commingling, which is projected to save brand owners approximately $600 million annually in workaround costs. Agarwal, a veteran of nearly 27 years at Amazon, previously served as a technical advisor to founder Jeff Bezos and has been instrumental in launching various initiatives, including the marketplace in India.
