Alaska Airlines operates around 1,500 daily flights and is spearheading efforts to enhance sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) usage. Ryan Spies, the airline's managing director of sustainability, emphasizes the importance of collective action and consumer engagement in driving significant environmental change.
Spies advocates for customers to express their sustainability concerns directly to companies, stating that customer feedback can influence corporate practices. His role encompasses overseeing climate reporting, public policy, and operational efficiency, as well as initiatives aimed at reducing waste.
As a founding member of the Cascadia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Accelerator, which began in January, Alaska Airlines aims to position the Pacific Northwest as a leader in SAF development. Spies, who transitioned into sustainability after realizing the urgency of climate issues, encourages proactive involvement from individuals to combat climate change effectively.
