The introduction of the Gemini app for Mac by Google has faced criticism since its launch in June. Users have reported that the app falls short compared to the web version accessible through Safari, with some functionalities failing to work properly. Particularly concerning is a persistent issue where a chat thread does not operate on the Mac app but functions well when accessed through Safari's "Add to Dock" feature.
Additionally, users have expressed frustration over the app's installation process. It installs a background helper, GeminiAppLauncher, and a process called GoogleUpdater without user consent, which can be automatically reinstated even after removal. This has prompted users like John Gruber to uninstall the app entirely, citing concerns over privacy and control.
Furthermore, the app's icon design has been criticized for not adhering to Apple's strict guidelines, leading to what some call "icon jail." These issues have raised questions about the overall usability and user experience of the Gemini app for Mac.
