Apple has unveiled the next iteration of its operating system, naming it MacOS 27 Golden Gate during the WWDC 2026 event. This announcement was made by Craig Federighi, the software chief, who introduced the new version while a VW bus drove by, signifying a departure from previous expectations.
Unlike prior assumptions that favored names like Redwood and Mammoth, the choice of Golden Gate emerged unexpectedly. This update focuses on enhancing performance and stability rather than introducing drastic design changes. Users can anticipate improved responsiveness and new features in search functionalities across applications.
Devices equipped with Apple's M-series chips, starting from the M1 and including the A18 Pro-based MacBook Neo, will be eligible for the upgrade. However, several older Intel-based models, including the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020) and 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), will not support the new operating system. Apple will still provide security updates for these Intel Macs for an additional three years.
