A new open-source project has brought the tiled Start menu from Windows 8.1 to Linux, generating significant interest among users. The initiative, led by a developer known as N3Rumie, aims to recreate the controversial menu interface that many users had mixed feelings about. The project supports various applications including flatpaks and Steam, and offers customizable tiles and colors.
Written in Python, the software allows users to move tiles, create groups, and even set wallpapers as backgrounds. While it mimics approximately 80% of the original functionality of the Windows 8.1 Start menu, it currently lacks a search mode and larger tile options. The project has gained traction, accumulating 627 upvotes on the Linux subreddit shortly after its announcement.
For installation, users need PyQt6 6.10.1 and pynput 1.8.1. Although the developer faced challenges with GitHub, they opted to share the code via Pastebin. The tool sits in the system tray, activated by pressing "super+p," making it a unique addition to the Linux desktop experience.
