Google's latest updates for its Messages app include features that are currently being rolled out in beta and stable versions. A new trash folder will allow users to retain deleted chats for up to 30 days, accessible from the account menu. Additionally, real-time location sharing is being enhanced, allowing users to select various time increments for sharing their location, displayed in an expandable map within chats.
Among the recent features, end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging is undergoing testing between iPhone and Android devices, with indications of successful integration as users will notice a lock icon at the start of their message threads. The read receipts feature has also been redesigned; now, users can see read confirmations in a circular format at the bottom-right of message bubbles.
Moreover, the app is improving group chat interactions with the introduction of @mentions, which allow users to draw attention even if notifications are muted. Google is also implementing a long-press menu that offers a floating interface for easier access to functions, enhancing user experience across the platform.
