Meta has introduced a new feature called Instants, enabling users to share unedited images with their close friends, which will disappear after being viewed. This app was announced on Wednesday and integrates with Instagram, allowing users to send images directly to mutual followers or friends without editing options, though captions can be included.
Photos shared via Instants are designed to vanish within 24 hours, similar to the functionalities of platforms like Snapchat and BeReal. An undo button is available for those who may have second thoughts about their shared content. Users can access this feature by opening their Instagram inbox, where they will find a stack of images ready for selection.
While Instagram claims that screenshots cannot be taken of Instants, concerns regarding privacy persist, as users can still use alternative methods to capture images before they disappear. Community guidelines and safety measures will be enforced, but the effectiveness of these protocols remains to be seen. Additionally, Meta recently halted end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, raising further questions about user privacy.
