Apple has launched a significant update with iOS 26.5, enabling encrypted cross-platform messaging for the first time. This development comes almost 18 months after the FBI advised users against texting between iPhone and Android devices. However, the new feature has limitations regarding device compatibility and carrier support, meaning not all iPhones will support fully secure RCS messaging.
The end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging is conditional on both devices being connected to compatible networks. Unlike WhatsApp, which maintains encryption across all messages, the security of RCS can vary depending on the carrier used at the time. Apple has indicated that this feature is rolling out gradually and will only be available with supported carriers.
As users begin receiving the update, the emphasis will shift towards understanding how these changes impact cross-platform communication. Despite advancements, users may still find better security within the ecosystems of Apple and Google or when using alternative messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal.
