Toyota is set to join a joint venture named cellcentric, which is the result of a collaboration between Daimler and Volvo initiated in 2020, to advance fuel cell technology. The partnership aims to enhance the development and production of fuel cell unit cells, leveraging Toyota’s extensive experience in fuel-cell technology acquired over three decades in the passenger vehicle sector.
President and CEO of Toyota, Koji Sato, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to partner with Daimler Truck and Volvo Group, emphasizing the potential to create leading fuel cell systems for heavy commercial vehicles. This strategic move diverges from current industry trends, as competitors like Stellantis and GM have recently abandoned their hydrogen fuel cell initiatives.
While many companies are shifting away from hydrogen, Toyota’s renewed focus signifies a commitment to exploring industrial applications alongside its commercial pursuits.
