The use of KC Green’s artwork in an ad campaign by AI startup Artisan has sparked controversy, as the artist claims his work was appropriated without permission. The advertisement, spotted in a subway station, alters Green’s iconic comic featuring an anthropomorphic dog, replacing its original text with “[M]y pipeline is on fire” alongside a call to action to “Hire Ava the AI BDR.”
Green expressed discontent over the situation in a social media post, emphasizing that he did not consent to the advertisement's use and likening the appropriation to how AI technology often misuses art. He urged followers to “vandalize” the ad upon sight. In response to inquiries, Artisan acknowledged their respect for Green and stated they would be reaching out to him directly.
Originally appearing in Green's webcomic “Gunshow” in 2013, the meme has gained immense popularity, yet Green feels it's now beyond his control. He is considering pursuing legal representation to address the unauthorized use of his art, stating it detracts from his passion for creating comics.
