The release of Scream 7 is set for February 27, intensifying the ongoing legal dispute over the rights to the iconic Ghostface mask. Paramount and Spyglass are suing Alterian Ghost Factory to prevent potential copyright infringement claims that could disrupt the film's debut.
Paramount and Spyglass assert that Alterian has neglected its rights concerning the Ghostface mask for decades, stating in their complaint that the company has failed to legally establish ownership. The mask, first created by Fun World in the early 1990s, became associated with the franchise after being licensed for the films, with the notable exception of the MTV series.
Alterian contends that its original design predates Fun World's licensing agreement with Paramount, claiming the latter acted improperly. Paramount maintains that Alterian's inaction over the years forfeits any claim to the mask, labeling the timing of the lawsuit as an "outrageous attempt" to leverage the film's imminent release.
