During a recent commencement ceremony at Stanford, a significant protest occurred as over 100 graduates walked out on Google CEO Sundar Pichai while he addressed the audience. The walkout was accompanied by chants of “Free, free Palestine” and “Shame on you,” reflecting the students' disapproval of Google’s involvement with Israel through a controversial contract.
This contract, known as Project Nimbus, is a joint agreement between Google and Amazon with the Israeli military, reportedly valued at $1.2 billion. The arrangement provides advanced AI and cloud computing services to the Israeli government. Critics, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have raised concerns regarding the lack of transparency surrounding this project.
Despite the protests, Pichai continued his speech, which did not seem to delve into contentious topics. The incident follows a similar event where former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced heckling during a commencement address at the University of Arizona, highlighting growing tensions regarding corporate ties to government entities.
