In 2025, Richmond's startup ecosystem expanded significantly, marked by the introduction of innovative businesses and funding opportunities. One notable entrant is Ohm Health, founded by James McGoff, who previously worked with TemperPack Technologies. Ohm Health has recently opened pre-orders for its unique breathing lamp, priced at $249, which is designed to assist users in practicing intentional breathing.
Alongside Ohm Health, a trio of software engineers from VCU—Sheikh Uddin, Mahir Rahman, and Prakash Chatlani—launched the Pickup app in May. This platform facilitates the organization of pickup sports games in the Richmond area, allowing users to create and join games across approximately 15 different sports. Uddin indicated that future enhancements might include a paid membership option for personalized game-finding services.
Additionally, Rafe Wilkinson Jr., a first-time entrepreneur, has introduced HumanFood, a new brand of dog food aimed at promoting gut health. Launched in October, the brand originated from Startup Virginia’s Idea Factory and currently offers a chicken and brown rice flavor in an 11-pound bag.
