OpenAI has made a significant move into the media sector by acquiring Technology Business Programming Network (TBPN), a company known for its weekday tech show. This acquisition aims to foster discussions around the implications of AI advancements, according to Fidji Simo, the CEO of AGI deployment at OpenAI. The show, which has been likened to ESPN for tech, features a mix of news, analysis, and commentary on topics like crypto and startups.
Launched in October 2024, TBPN attracts around 70,000 daily viewers and is expected to generate over $30 million in revenue this year. The show's hosts, Jordi Hays and John Coogan, have welcomed high-profile guests, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg. Hays noted the importance of maintaining critical dialogue about the AI industry, emphasizing the show's commitment to impactful discussions.
The acquisition aligns with OpenAI's recent strategic shift to concentrate on business applications of AI, moving away from less focused projects. Simo expressed confidence in leveraging TBPN’s marketing expertise to enhance its presence in the tech media landscape.
