Netflix has made a notable acquisition, purchasing InterPositive, a postproduction startup founded by actor and director Ben Affleck. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed. Previously, Affleck expressed skepticism about artificial intelligence, indicating he believed it could not create meaningful content. However, he has shifted his perspective, now recognizing AI as a significant innovation.
InterPositive focuses on enhancing the post-production process rather than generating content from scratch. Its tools assist with tasks such as correcting lighting, reframing shots, and removing wires from stunts, all while utilizing footage from the actual production. This reflects a broader trend within the media sector, where AI is increasingly being integrated into creative workflows, despite past concerns about its potential impact on jobs.
In a statement, Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, emphasized the importance of tools that enhance creative freedom for writers and filmmakers. The acquisition comes shortly after Netflix withdrew from a competitive bid for Warner Bros Discovery’s assets, which was ultimately won by Paramount Skydance with a superior offer.
