Our Next Energy, a Michigan-based startup, is undergoing significant changes as it pivots away from its initial focus on electric vehicles (EVs). The company, led by CEO Mujeeb Ijaz, is now shifting its attention toward opportunities in the defense and rail sectors, leading to a reduction in staff. Previously, ONE had expanded rapidly, establishing multiple facilities and employing around 500 individuals.
Ijaz, who has a background with both Ford and Apple, relocated the company to Novi in 2021 and aimed to develop batteries capable of powering EVs for extended ranges. However, the changing landscape of consumer interest in electric vehicles has prompted the company to reassess its strategies. Ijaz's ties to Detroit date back to his time as an engineering student at Virginia Tech, where he participated in the first Solar Car Challenge.
As the EV market adjusts, One's new direction underscores a broader recalibration within the industry, with many companies, including ONE, looking beyond traditional automotive applications.
