Meta has officially closed three of its virtual reality studios: Armature, Sanzaru, and Twisted Pixel. This decision follows the company's recent shift in focus from its metaverse investments towards wearables. As a result, the popular VR fitness app Supernatural will stop receiving new content or feature updates effective immediately.
Employees from the affected studios, including those behind titles like Marvel's Deadpool VR and Asgard's Wrath, have expressed their concerns about the closures on social media. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the changes and reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting the VR industry despite these cuts. They emphasized a strategy to concentrate on third-party developers and partners to ensure sustainability in the long term.
Meta has not introduced any new VR headsets since the Quest 3S, which was released in 2024, and has paused the development of Horizon OS headsets in collaboration with Asus and Lenovo. While the company has indicated a redirection of its resources, it maintains that it remains invested in the gaming sector.
