Apple is set to permanently shut down three retail locations this summer, including the first store where employees unionized. The closures will affect the Apple Store in Towson, MD, as well as stores in Trumbull, CT and Escondido, CA.
In a statement, the company attributed the decision to the "departure of several retailers and declining conditions" at the shopping centers housing these stores. Employees from the Trumbull and North County outlets will have opportunities to work at nearby locations, while those in Towson can apply for other positions in line with the existing collective bargaining agreement.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, representing the Towson employees, expressed concerns about the closure, suggesting it may be an attempt to undermine the union. They are considering all legal options and will engage with officials to challenge Apple's actions.
