Space Beyond has revealed plans to launch an innovative program called “Ashes to Space,” allowing individuals to send the ashes of loved ones into orbit. This service aims to make space memorialization accessible, with prices starting at just $249, significantly lower than offerings from competitors that typically charge thousands.
Founded by Ryan Mitchell, a former engineer for NASA and Blue Origin, the company signed a launch services agreement with Arrow Science and Technology. The integration of their CubeSat into a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare mission is set for October 2027.
Mitchell's inspiration for the service came during a family ceremony, prompting him to seek a better way to memorialize loved ones. He highlighted the affordability of the service, emphasizing that Space Beyond operates independently without seeking large investor returns, which allows for lower pricing.
The use of rideshare missions has democratized access to space, enabling smaller companies to launch CubeSats at a fraction of traditional costs. This approach supports a new wave of scientific and commercial endeavors.
