Gemini Nano, a 4GB AI model, is being installed on users' devices through Google Chrome without their consent. This undisclosed installation applies to devices that meet specific hardware requirements, though the exact number of affected users remains unclear.
Developed by Google, Gemini Nano can perform various functions, including detecting scam calls, assisting in text message composition, summarizing audio recordings, and analyzing screenshots from Pixel phones. Unlike the AI Mode feature, which routes queries to Google’s servers, Gemini Nano operates locally on the device.
A Google representative indicated that the model would automatically uninstall itself if the device lacked sufficient resources, such as processing power or memory. Furthermore, users can remove Gemini Nano by accessing Chrome settings or by entering "chrome://flags" in the address bar to disable the optimization guide.
Privacy advocate Alexander Hanff emphasized that users are unaware of the model's presence unless they actively seek it, as Chrome does not inform them about the installation. For those concerned about privacy, uninstalling Chrome or disabling the feature are potential solutions.
