The Allen Institute for AI, also known as Ai2, has officially launched a new computing system as part of a $152 million initiative aimed at enhancing open AI models for scientific research. This significant development marks a key milestone in the project, which is funded by both Nvidia and the National Science Foundation.
The new infrastructure, situated near Austin, operates on Nvidia’s Blackwell Ultra chips and is managed by Cirrascale Cloud Services. Ai2's senior research director, Noah Smith, emphasized the importance of this project as a national investment that aims to maintain accessibility in advanced AI development for the research community.
In addition to its new computing cluster, Ai2 has reported improvements to its existing model families, including the introduction of a multimodal model for video analysis and enhancements to its language model architecture. The institute is now concentrating on developing unified models that can process various data types and strengthening collaborations with scientific communities for practical applications.
