Microsoft has acquired Osmos, a startup based in Seattle that specializes in automating data engineering tasks. The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The Osmos team will integrate with the engineering division responsible for Microsoft Fabric, the company's platform for data and analytics, to enhance autonomous data engineering.
Founded in 2019, Osmos initially concentrated on external data ingestion but expanded its focus to incorporate large language models within data workflows. This evolution led to the development of products that align with Microsoft Fabric’s capabilities.
The acquisition will result in the discontinuation of Osmos’ independent products, with plans for their phased sunset starting in January 2026. Current offerings such as Uploaders and Pipelines will transition as their technology becomes part of Microsoft Fabric.
Osmos previously secured $13 million in funding in 2021, with investment from firms including Lightspeed and CRV. CEO Kirat Pandya and co-founder Naresh Venkat bring experience from prestigious companies like Google and Microsoft, contributing to a team of fewer than 20 employees.
