Sophia Space has successfully secured $10 million in seed financing to advance its development of orbital computing systems aimed at enhancing space-based data processing capabilities. The investment, led by Alpha Funds, KDDI Green Partners Fund, and Unlock Venture Partners, follows a previous $3.5 million pre-seed round.
The startup, headquartered in Pasadena, California, is known for its innovative Thermal-Integrated LEO Edge (TILE) infrastructure, which utilizes modular satellite tiles that are each equipped with solar panels. This system allows for scalable computing power in low Earth orbit, addressing significant challenges faced by traditional terrestrial data centers.
CEO Rob DeMillo emphasized that the funding will not only facilitate the production of compute modules but also the creation of essential infrastructure for the evolving landscape of space-based artificial intelligence and data processing. The company plans to demonstrate its technology in space later this year.
Founded by Leon Alkalai, a former NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory fellow, Sophia Space also benefits from the expertise of Chief Growth Officer Brian Monnin, who has a background with major tech firms such as Intel and Microsoft.
