OpenAI aims to integrate its Sora video generation model into ChatGPT, following a decline in interest for the standalone Sora app since its launch in September 2025. Initially successful, the app is no longer among the top 100 free applications in the App Store, with a limited number of users sharing videos publicly. Despite this, the standalone version will continue to operate alongside the integration.
The addition to ChatGPT could potentially increase the app's weekly active users from 900 million to over 1 billion, as reported by The Information. OpenAI has faced challenges in monetizing the Sora app, charging $0.10 per second for video generation and previously offering 30 free daily video generations per account.
Looking ahead, OpenAI is projected to incur costs exceeding $225 billion for inference operations from 2026 to 2030. The company may explore monetization strategies, such as allowing users to generate videos featuring Disney characters, to increase revenue as demand for video generation grows.
