Starting in 2026, Google will modify its approach to releasing source code for Android, limiting updates to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to just two times a year in Q2 and Q4. This decision is intended to align with Google's new trunk-stable development model, enhancing platform stability for developers. The company aims to simplify the management of various code branches, which should provide developers with access to a more secure and stable platform.
The announcement follows the previous release of Android 16, which saw an unusual delay in its source code release. With this change, custom ROM projects like LineageOS will need to adjust their timelines, as they will only have access to updates based on the major Android release and its subsequent QPR build. Regular Pixel users will not experience any disruptions, as they will continue to receive the Quarterly Platform Release as scheduled.
Despite the streamlined release schedule, Google will maintain its commitment to monthly security patches, ensuring that users receive critical updates regularly. This move reflects Google's ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and stability within its Android ecosystem.
